What backend architecture do you use for your applications?

The backend is where many applications quietly become complicated. Which database would you choose for a new project today, and why?

Database choices are one of those decisions that developers can argue about for hours. PostgreSQL versus MySQL. SQL versus NoSQL. Managed database versus self-hosted. Relational systems versus document databases. One database versus several specialized systems. But the interesting part isn't which database is universally "best." There probably isn't one. The real question is: what problem are you solving? For a new project, would you choose PostgreSQL because of its flexibility and relational features? SQLite because you want simplicity? MongoDB because your data model fits documents naturally? Redis for specific high-speed workloads? Something distributed because you're operating at a very large scale? I'd also like to hear people's experiences after choosing a database and living with that decision. Did your original choice make development easier? Did you eventually hit scaling limitations? What security mistake do developers underestimate the most?

Security often gets treated as a separate department, but many serious vulnerabilities begin with extremely ordinary development decisions. A missing authorization check. An exposed API key. What separates "working code" from genuinely good software?

Almost everyone who has written enough code eventually reaches the same realization: making something work is only the beginning. What is the most interesting AI project you're working on right now?

AI has gone from being something many developers experimented with occasionally to becoming part of everyday software development. We're seeing local models, hosted APIs, multimodal systems, coding agents, retrieval systems, autonomous workflows, image generation, voice interfaces, and entire products built around these capabilities. But beyond the hype, I'm interested in what people are actually building. Are you experimenting with local LLMs? Building an AI assistant? Training or fine-tuning a model? Creating an agent that can use tools? Working with embeddings and retrieval? Building image, audio, or video systems? Adding AI to an existing application? There is also a very interesting divide between people who are using huge hosted models and people who are trying to run smaller models locally. Local inference brings completely different constraints. Suddenly GPU memory, quantization, inference speed, context windows, and model size become practical engineering problems instead of abstract specifications. I'd also like to hear what people think is currently overhyped in AI. There are technologies that look incredible in demos but become frustrating when you try to build a real product around them. What has actually worked for you? Share the project you're building, the models or tools you're using, the problem you're trying to solve, and what you've learned so far. It doesn't need to be a finished product. Experimental projects are often the most interesting ones because they expose problems that polished demos hide. What does your modern web development stack look like in 2026?

Web development has changed ridiculously fast. A stack that felt modern a few years ago can suddenly feel completely different today. Frameworks evolve, runtimes change, deployment platforms keep moving, and AI-assisted development has started changing how people actually write code. I'm curious what everyone's current stack looks like. For example, what are you using for the frontend? React, Next.js, Vue, Svelte, plain JavaScript, something else? What about backend development? Node.js, Python, Go, PHP, Java, .NET, serverless functions, or your own API architecture? Then there is everything around the application itself. Which database are you using? PostgreSQL? MySQL? MongoDB? SQLite? Redis? Something distributed? How are you handling authentication? Where are you deploying? Vercel, Cloudflare, AWS, Azure, a VPS, your own server, or a mixture? And perhaps the most interesting question: which parts of modern web development do you think have genuinely improved, and which parts have simply become more complicated? There is a strange feeling in web development where making a tiny website can involve dozens of technologies, yet sometimes the best solution is still a simple HTML page and a tiny server. For people starting today, the huge number of available tools can be both exciting and overwhelming. There are countless tutorials telling people which framework to learn, but far fewer conversations about choosing technology based on the actual problem. Share your current stack and what kind of projects you use it for. I'd especially like to hear from people who deliberately chose a "boring" technology because it was the right fit.

What are you building right now, and what are you using to build it?

Programming is one of those fields where everyone seems to have a slightly different path into it. Some people started with Python, others with JavaScript, C++, Java, Rust, Go, or something much more unusual. Some learned by following courses, some learned by breaking things until they finally worked, and others simply had an idea they wanted to turn into reality. So let's make this the introduction thread for everyone interested in programming. What are you currently learning or building? What programming language do you use the most, and what made you choose it? Are you working on a website, application, game, automation script, API, open-source project, personal tool, or something completely experimental? I'd also love to know what you think is currently the hardest part of becoming a better programmer. Is it understanding algorithms? Writing clean code? Debugging? Architecture? Reading other people's code? Knowing which technology to choose? Or simply staying consistent enough to keep learning? One thing I've noticed is that programming becomes much more interesting when you stop thinking about it only as "learning a language" and start thinking about it as learning how to solve problems. The language is the tool. The real skill is figuring out what needs to happen, breaking the problem down, and turning that reasoning into something a computer can execute. How are you deploying your projects today?

Building software locally is one thing. Making it reliable for real users is an entirely different problem. Suddenly you care about deployment pipelines, environments, logs, monitoring, DNS, backups, secrets, scaling, networking, database migrations, uptime, rollback strategies, and what happens when something breaks at three in the morning. So I'm curious how everyone here handles deployment. Are you using a major cloud provider? A VPS? Containers? Kubernetes? Serverless infrastructure? Platform-as-a-service? Your own hardware? A combination of several services? And more importantly, what does your deployment process actually look like? Can you push to Git and automatically deploy? Do you have staging and production environments? Automated tests? Infrastructure as code? Monitoring and alerts? Automated backups? Rollbacks? There is a tendency to overcomplicate infrastructure because modern tooling gives us an enormous number of options. A small application might suddenly end up with Docker, Kubernetes, multiple cloud services, message queues, several databases, and twelve monitoring dashboards. Sometimes that's necessary. Sometimes it isn't. I'd love to hear about both ends of the spectrum. Share your infrastructure setup and explain why you chose it. If you've migrated from one architecture to another, tell us what went wrong and what you would do differently today.

And somehow we still end up spending hours debating tiny differences between components. So let's build the ideal system. Imagine you have a realistic budget and your goal is a machine specifically designed for your workload. What are you choosing? Gaming? AI? Video editing? 3D rendering? Software development? Streaming? A mixture? What matters most to you: raw performance, efficiency, acoustics, upgradeability, reliability, aesthetics, or value? I'd also like to hear about bad hardware purchases.
